Africola! It's an Australian dining superstar, and it's a title well deserved. It was hands-down one of our best meals of 2019. ⁠

On a work trip to Adelaide, we managed to reserve a very late sitting and opted for the 'feed me' option... good-lordy... cracking dish after cracking dish just-kept-coming. Each one bought over by friendly and conversational staff who made us feel welcomed and increasingly relaxed. A few bottles of Barossa wine later, and we found ourselves the last people in the restaurant, but not once were we ever hurried. We were left to enjoy our time and our drinks, with staff remaining attentive to us as diners until we walked out the door. ⁠

It was a 10/10 meal. ⁠
⁠
And this has to be said - I know everyone goes on about the chicken skin sandwich, but it's hard not to. It's so simple but so darn tasty. It's a near-perfect food creation that any restaurant should be envious of.⁠

Sometimes places don't live up to their hype, but sometimes they do, and then some. Africola proved it's worth every praise it's given. ⁠

Also, a special mention should go to their branding: it's straight-up bitchin'! ⁠

Fugu! 2019 was the year that Mel and myself (Drew) finally ate fugu! That in itself is a dining highlight for 2019, but in truth, that was just one dish in an amazing kaiseki dinner at Ise Sueyoshi (@isesueyoshi) in Tokyo. ⁠

There are so many good things to talk about at Ise Sueyoshi, but I will just mention a couple of them. ⁠
⁠
1. The education we received at Ise Sueyoshi was wonderful. Chef Yuki Tanaka, who is clearly proud of his hometown produce, told us stories about everything, from the Sake we drank to the farmers he sources from. ⁠
⁠
2. Like the rest of Japan, the service at Ise Sueyoshi is next level. The whole meal was highly choreographed, ensuring everything was smooth and effortless for us as diners. ⁠

3. Chef Yuki is a delight. Enthusiastic, yet calm. Formal, yet relaxed and conversational. We got a photo with him which sits in our office. ⁠

4. We got to have fugu! This is fugu! ⁠

I'm sure we will post more about Ise Sueyoshi in the future. It was one of those meals that we'll always remember fondly, and use as a benchmark for others. Read more in the bio. ⁠

Todays 'best of 2019' is not a dish, but a whole meal. ⁠

After finishing up at a client event in the city, we stepped out onto Clarence street in search of some late-night dinner. Thankfully, right in front of us, like a shining Mexican angel on a hill, was @chicabonita_sydney ⁠
⁠
After starting with some Jalapeño Margaritas we dove headfirst into Ceviche, Tostadas, Chicharron Gordita, soft shell crab and many many many tacos. It was all fresh and light with a nice hum of spice. Friendly staff gave us a rundown of everything we were eating - without a monotone scripted delivery - and the manager brought over a Mexican drink, which for the life of me I can't remember now, to try with our Chicharron. ⁠

The whole meal was just good old fashion fun! It's as simple as that. But don't get us wrong - relaxed and fun doesn't mean haphazard or complacent. This is a venue that has mastered the art of effortlessly executing a well-orchestrated service, with a kitchen pumping out quality food. You can't go wrong with that combo. ⁠

As the year comes to an end, we thought we would post some of the best dishes we had this year. There are no special criteria other than it had to be good. That's it. ⁠

Let's begin with breakfast at @callapyrmont: The scrambled eggs cooked in brown butter, served with sausages, a mushroom relish and sourdough toast was breakfast perfection. Per.Fec.Tion. ⁠

Too often venues put a spin on a classic, but don't get the base classic right first. The team at Calla got every-damn-thing on the plate perfect. It was a sad moment when we took our last bite.⁠
⁠
We were also those customers that come in 1min before the change from breakfast to lunch, but the Calla team didn't huff and puff and act like we were destroying their day. Our waiter calmly asked if we'd prefer breakfast or lunch, and then told the kitchen who happily obliged us. ⁠

Thank you, Calla! This was easily one of our dishes of the year.⁠
